REVIEW #7: Fighting Fire with Fire: Employing Regulation against Government

Zilvinas Silenas and 4liberty.eu/November 7, 2017 /Leave a comment

The 2008 financial crisis, geopolitical tensions, and other macro factors have slowed down SOE privatization. In some CEE countries, the trend has even reversed. Estonia nationalized its railways in 2007 and Lithuania bought out private investors in its energy companies.

REVIEW #7: Municipal Energy Concepts: A Sustainable Model for Energy Transition or an Inefficient Distraction?

Steffen Hentrich and 4liberty.eu/November 7, 2017 /Leave a comment

Energy transformation, Germany’s plan to transform the energy industry into a greenhouse gas-neutral energy supply, is no longer solely a federal government project. Local authorities are beginning to push ahead with energy transition focused on decentralized municipal energy concepts.

REVIEW #7: Crony-Owned Enterprises in Hungary

Eszter Nova and 4liberty.eu/November 6, 2017 /Leave a comment

The Hungarian state’s share in the economy is high – but mostly in line with other countries. What stands out among OECD countries is the number of companies owned partially or wholly by the state that attests to some degree of micromanagement.

REVIEW #7: Repolonization and State Patronage: Current Challenges for Poland

Adam Szlapka and 4liberty.eu/November 6, 2017 /Leave a comment

In finance and development, Law and Justice has also set a controversial goal of boosting state control over the economy. One of the main obstacles for Poland’s development – based on the government’s Plan for Responsible Development – is a lack of balance between foreign and domestic capital.

REVIEW #7: SOEs in Serbia: Substituting Market Failure with Government Failure

Mihailo Gajic and 4liberty.eu/November 6, 2017 /Leave a comment

In Serbia there is a plethora of possible government policy actions beyond the establishment and operation of SOEs. Having in mind the negative results stemming from the operation of SOEs, to alleviate this problem an approach other than appointing new management is necessary, as might be heard in public discourse.

REVIEW #7: The Slovak State as an Entrepreneur

Martin Vlachynsky and 4liberty.eu/November 6, 2017November 6, 2017 /Leave a comment

The first 16 years of the post-1989 period in Slovakia can be described as an era of privatization. A majority of the state-owned economy was transformed into a market-oriented model, where state-owned enterprises (SOEs) remain the only key player in several sectors.

REVIEW #7: Governments in Business and the Fate of De-Etatization

Krassen Stanchev and 4liberty.eu/November 6, 2017 /Leave a comment

Milton Friedman once remarked that “you must separate out being pro-market from being pro-business”, and continued: “the two greatest enemies of the free enterprise system, in my opinion, have been on the one hand my fellow intellectuals, and on the other hand, the big businessmen – for opposite reasons”.

Polish State-Owned Enterprises Attack the Courts on the Ruling Party Order

Rafal Trzeciakowski and FOR/November 6, 2017November 6, 2017 /Leave a comment

The Law and Justice Party (PiS) has been using state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to push for changes in the justice system that are detrimental to rule of law, economic growth, and civil liberties. At the same time, SOEs saved the Polish Mining Group (PGG) from bankruptcy.

The State Spends More than Poles Think

FOR/July 17, 2017July 17, 2017 /Leave a comment

Poles do not know how much and on what the Polish state spends their money. Meanwhile, the structure and size of public spending have a direct impact on their daily lives by influencing the level of taxation and the availability of public services.

Society

Church Contra Civil Society: The Holy Fight for St. Isaac’s Cathedral in Russia

Nikolay Artemenko and Libel/March 9, 2017August 7, 2017 /Leave a comment

The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) decided to seize the Cathedral, asking the city government to allocate it to the ownership of the church. It should be noted that the ROC has a rather dubious attitude to religion as such. These days it is mostly a tool used by religious leaders to make money.
